Chondroitin Sulphate

Chondroitin Sulphate

Chondroitin sulphate belongs to a family of compounds called glycosaminoglycans and is a naturally occuring substance in your body. Chondroitin sulphate helps to provide elasticity in the cartilage in your joints and maintain the correct level of moisture and lubrication.

Chondroitin sulphate: how is it used?

The natural reaction of joints to a strain, injury or wear and tear is to become inflamed, whether visibly so or not - a greater amount of synovial fluid - "joint oil" - is produced (which is often of poorer quality) and enzymes can be produced which actually degrade the cartilage and synovial fluid further. This causes sustained, if not greater, inflammation... the self perpetuating arthritic cycle.

Several studies indicate that Chondroitin Sulphate can reduce the activity of elastase, an enzyme released by white blood cells in inflamed joints which breaks down elastic fibres and thus reduces the resiliency of cartilage.

Problem...

Chondroitin sulphate is a very large molecule and supplements containing chondroitin suffer from the same problem as those containing glucosamine. See the problem with glucosamine

Glucosamine & Chondroitin supplements

Providing additional Glucosamine speeds up the repair and renewal of damaged or worn articulating cartilage whilst additional Chondroitin helps to neutralise the destructive enzymes and improve the quality of the synovial fluid.

There are several brands of supplement on the market many of which have beneficial effects. However, see the problem with glucosamine to find out why one particular glucosamine supplement has consistently proven most successful.
